Friendship is a mysterious island at the Archipiélago de las Guitecas (Chile) which does not exist on the map. People from the south know the island by rumors that link Friendship to miraculous healings and UFO phenomena. Toto Island is part of the same archipelago to which Shingo traveled with an improvised manual for basic communication, containing ready made phrases in Spanish regarding the purpose of his trip. The manual, an old radio and his video camera would be the only means to establish contacts and collect information on the Friendship enigma.

Juan Daniel's memory doesn't belong to him anymore. After an amnesiac accident at the beginning of 2009, he started watching home-videos and having reminiscent dreams in the need of reconstructing his memory and identity. Tatsuya Kawakami's mother becomes a member of a religious group after her husband commits suicide, and makes a large donation to the organization. Her three children are forced to live in poverty, and her eldest son, who is blind in one eye due to illness, takes his own life. Kawakami comes to believe that the religious group has ruined his life, so he creates a homemade gun and carries out an assassination plot against former prime minister Shinzo Abe, who has close ties to the religious group, which has been accused of siphoning off money from its members.

In his contribution to the On Art and Artists interview series, Nathaniel Dorsky (b.1943) begins by discussing his childhood love of the John Ford film Stagecoach and its influence upon his decision to make films while attending Antioch College. Describing the affinity he developed for work operating at the intersection of film materiality and personal language, Dorsky explains how he developed his philosophy of the “devotional film” and the “microcosmic viewer.” Dorsky likens his practice to Buddhist sculpture, referring to himself as a “Japanese poet continuing aspects of the ethos of the Marxist revolution.” In the interview, the artist describes his use of the screen as an “altarpiece for the image” and emphasizes his use of editing to create works which “harmoniously coalesce.” Interview conducted by Jeffrey Skoller in May 2000, edited in 2014.
